Deciding what to wear in family photos can be a daunting task. These are the photos you’ll hang on your walls and cherish for years to come. It can seem overwhelming when considering what to wear but it doesn’t need to be. I’m sharing my top 3 tips to plan your outfits.
It’s easiest to start with one person’s outfit. You don’t dump a puzzle out of a box and magically see the whole picture, right? Start with one piece and move on from there.
Choose one color that you love and add 1-2 accent colors. Use as many tones and textures of that main color and with the added accents, you’ll all look consistent and picture perfect. (keep scrolling to see a BUNCH of color scheme ideas!)
Add a scarf, necklace, suspenders, cardigan, headband, earrings, blazers, fun shoes! Allow your personality to come through by adding some textured details.
If you’re planning to hang your images in the formal living room, consider the overall theme and colors of that room. It might seem out of place for a family in denim and bright colors hanging over a black shiny grand piano.
Give yourself plenty of time to gather and plan each family member’s outfit (and don’t forget the shoes!) Make sure everyone tries on their outfits about a week in advance too. Kids grow so quickly!
Mickey might be a cute character but leave him at home. Stay away from clothing that has cartoons or large logos on them. They will be distracting.
Will you be in the mountains or the beach? Try not to blend into your backdrop but stand out.
Keep in mind the temperature and time of year. No one will be excited for family photos if it’s 90 degrees and they’re wearing jackets (cute jackets, of course!) but not appropriate for a hot sunny day. Same goes for the colder months. Make sure everyone is wearing something that will keep them warm and happy.
Don’t fight the kids. My 4 year old Lucy absolutely hates dresses…HATES them. So, for family photos I give her a few options and let her choose. She feels like she has some control and is ultimately a happy camper because she got to choose!
Be yourselves. Wear something that you feel comfortable and confident in. When you look in the mirror, you like what you see.
